The Pleasant Prairie Police Department is pleased to announce the recent graduation of Lieutenant Randy Myles from the Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC). Lieutenant Myles was one of 31 students in SPSC Class 433 to successfully complete the 10-week program held in Evanston, IL from March 2018 through May 2018. This program, which was implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983, has produced thousands of national and international graduates. “I am appreciative for the opportunity I was given to take part in this highly recognized and respected program,” said Lieutenant Myles. “Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command has given me an advanced perspective on how to be an effective leader and civil servant.”

The SPSC program provides upper-level college instruction, covering topics such as Leadership, Human Resources, Employee Relations, Organizational Behavior, Applied Statistics, Planning and Policy Development, Budgeting and Resource Allocation; all necessary courses to become a successful leader for the Pleasant Prairie Police Department. Each student is academically challenged through written examinations, projects, presentations and quizzes, in addition to a staff study paper that are all required parts of the curriculum.  Pleasant Prairie Police Chief David Smetana commented, “Advanced leadership training is a priority for command staff in our agency. We hire people with identified leadership ability and foster those skills through their careers”.

The Center for Public Safety was established at Northwestern University in 1936 with the specific goal of expanding university-based education and training for the Law Enforcement Community. Since its inception, the Center has broadened its original objective and now provides a variety of courses and programs in the area of Police Training, Management Training, and Executive Development. The Pleasant Prairie Police Department anticipates a variety of benefits from Lieutenant Myles’ attendance at the School of Police Staff and Command.
