On November 30 at 11:42 a.m., Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a structure fire with a report of a subject that had possibly been burned. Upon arrival, units found a detached garage heavily involved in fire that was about to extend to a nearby home.
A conscious subject that had suffered burns was located at the end of the driveway and was being assisted by a neighbor. A Paramedic Unit quickly attended to the burn victim and provided Advanced Life Support while transporting him to a landing zone where they were met by Flight-for-Life. The Flight-for-Life crew transported the subject by helicopter to St. Mary's Burn Unit in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The fire was quickly extinguished, and the nearby home was not damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation however, the fire is not suspicious in nature. Pleasant Prairie units were assisted by fire and rescue units from Bristol, Kenosha, and Salem, Wisconsin and units from Beach Park, Newport, Winthrop Harbor, and Zion, Illinois.
The units from Bristol and Salem were called to backfill Pleasant Prairie's fire station while crews were on scene. While the other units were responding to the 44th Avenue fire, the units from Bristol and Salem responded to a rescue call on the west side of Pleasant Prairie. The practice of backfilling stations with mutual aid partners is known as "change of quarters." It is a long established, very successful practice.
