Employment

    The Village of Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue Department employs full-time, part-time, and Paid-on-Call (POC) staff.

    Full-Time
    Applications for full-time positions are taken when a posting is announced. Typically, the eligibly list is active for one year. The requirements for full-time Firemedic position are:

    • NFPA Firefighter I (eligible for reciprocity to WI FF I)
    • NFPA Firefighter II (preferred)
    • WI Paramedic or NREMT-P (eligible for WI licensure)(at time of PFC interview)
    • Valid driver’s license
    • High school diploma/GED
    • Valid CPAT (at time of PFC interview)

    Part-Time
    The requirements for part-time employment are the same as those for full-time employment with the exception of the paramedic (EMT-P) requirement. Part-time employees are required to be at minimum a WI licensed EMT-Basic. Part-time hours are not guaranteed and may vary from week to week depending on staffing requirements. Typically, part-time positions are allotted no more than 28-30 hours per week, Monday - Sunday. Part-time members are expected to work every week (not casually) and expected to attend weekly department trainings.

     

    Candidate Physical Ability Test or "CPAT" is conducted and issued by a licensed agency. CPAT was developed after years of research and input from an international committee comprised of IAFF and IAFC members. See more information on CPAT, Click Here. The test requires firefighter candidates to engage in the following activities:

    • Stair climb
    • Hose drag
    • Equipment carry
    • Ladder raise & extension
    • Forcible entry
    • Search & Rescue
    • Ceiling breach & pull

     Hiring Process

    1. Application submission (along with certificates and other credentials)
    2. Written evaluation - National Firefighter Selection Test
    3. Interview - conducted with department Chief Officers.
    4. Police & Fire Commission interview
    5. Pre-employment evaluations - comprise of a background check, psychological evaluation, and medical assessment, and a valid CPAT certification.

    Following successful completion of the hiring process, new members of the department will undergo training to become familiar with department policies and procedures. This training is completed in an academy-style setting.
