Well Water

Well Permits & Well Water Safety

Effective January 6, 2003, the Village of Pleasant Prairie under Section 13.16(3) of the Municipal Code requires that all residents who have municipal water and a non-abandoned well acquire a Well Operation Permit.

A permit may be granted to a well owner to operate a well for a period not to exceed five years if the following requirements are met:

  1. The well and pump installation meets the requirements of Ch. NR 811.10 Wis. Adm. Code. The well constructor's report is on file with the Department of Natural Resources, or certification of the acceptability of the well has been granted by the Private Water Supply Section of the Department of Natural Resources.
  2. The well has a history of producing safe water and presently produces bacteriologically safe water as evidenced by two samplings two weeks apart.
  3. The proposed use of the well can be justified as being necessary in addition to water provided by the public water system.
  4. No physical connection shall exist between the piping of the public water system and the private well.

If you currently have municipal water and a well on your property, you are required to obtain a permit for the well or properly abandon the well. If you wish to obtain a permit for your well, contact the Village of Pleasant Prairie Utility Department at 262.925.6700 to set up an appointment for an inspection of your well and interior plumbing. The initial inspection and first water sample are done by the Utility Department at no charge.

Whether you have muncipal water and a well or only a well, it is recommended that you have your well water tested regularly. There are several tests that, if done periodically, can help owners of private wells determine whether they have safe, clean drinking water. Periodic testing will confirm the quality of your well water. You should consider testing any time you notice a change in odor or taste. The Village of Pleasant Prairie offers a water testing kit that will test for coliform bacteria for a nominal fee of $25.00.
