This October marks 25 years since the doors opened at RecPlex. The facility in Prairie Springs Park has grown into the largest municipally owned recreation center in the nation, offering amenities for members, residents, and visitors.
Planning for RecPlex began in 1998 after WisPark provided a $4 million donation for construction. A groundbreaking was held on October 12, 1999, and the facility officially opened to the public on October 1, 2000. The original facility included a 17,000-squarefoot leisure pool, a 60,000-square-foot field house, an 8,000-square-foot fitness center, a 1/6-mile indoor track, changing rooms, child-care area, and a snack bar.
Growth followed in 2004, with a 42,000-square-foot expansion which added a larger fitness center, additional childcare space, racquetball courts, multipurpose studios, party rooms, and a 79,000-square-foot ice arena with two NHL-sized rinks. With the enhancements, RecPlex expanded to 260,000 square feet.
A second major expansion in 2009, made possible through a partnership with ULINE, Inc., brought the RecPlex Aqua Arena. Dedicated in 2010, the 42,000-square-foot addition included an Olympic-sized competition pool with geothermal heating and cooling from Lake Andrea, and seating for approximately 600 spectators. Today, the facility measures 302,000 square feet.
RecPlex continues to provide residents with access to a wide range of recreation, fitness, and event opportunities. Pleasant Prairie taxpaying households receive annual benefits that include five free guest passes and Lake Andrea beach access. Residents also receive a free parking pass with a membership and discounted membership rates.
Beyond recreation, RecPlex contributes to the local economy by hosting tournaments, competitions, and events that bring visitors to the community. These activities generate tourism and support area businesses. As RecPlex marks 25 years of service, the facility continues to build on its original mission of providing recreation opportunities to the community, with its wide range of amenities, programs, and events. RecPlex remains a significant asset for residents and a destination for visitors throughout the region.
