PERMITS/INSPECTIONS
Who to call when you have questions...
Many home improvement and repair projects require that a contractor or homeowner performing certain types of work apply for a permit prior to beginning the work. Once work on the project is complete, the contractor or homeowner contacts their municipal inspector in order have the work inspected to ensure that it meets State and local building code requirements (established for safety purposes).
Building codes were created based on past, real-life experiences in order to prevent dangerous situations from being repeated (water and electricity, carbon monoxide poisoning, structural collapse). The types of work that typically require a permit include projects that involve electricity, plumbing, a building’s structure, property lines and work in the right-of-way (decks, fences, driveways), and heating/cooling equipment.
If you have questions regarding work being completed in your home and whether or not you should have a permit and an inspection by a licensed building inspector, you can contact the Building Inspection Department with your inquiries at 262.694.9304 or you can email [email protected]. Staff can talk you through which types of projects should have a permit and answer related questions you may have.
