On July 27, 2021, at 10:10 p.m., Pleasant Prairie Police were dispatched to a business in the 8800 block of 75th Street for a call reporting a male sleeping on the ground outside the business. The company requested the party be removed from the property. As officers arrived, they observed an individual, later identified as Daniel D. Lavelle of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, asleep on the ground and trespassing on the property. As the officers awakened Lavelle, they noted he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
Lavelle provided identification that didn't match his appearance or physical build; he appeared to be producing false information. The officers began to conduct further checks and attempted to detain Lavelle. At that point, Lavelle fled on foot from the officers, proceeding around the rear of the business. Officers tried to deploy a Taser to gain control of Lavelle, but the initial Taser discharge was ineffective.
One officer then took Lavelle to the ground as he continued to resist the officers. A struggle ensued with Lavelle physically resisting the officer's attempts to get him into custody and under control. Another officer utilized a second Taser discharge, during which Lavelle continued to resist arrest. Lavelle was eventually taken into custody and placed under control.
After being handcuffed, Lavelle struggled with officers and verbally threatened one of the officers with physical injury. Following departmental policy, after the use of multiple Taser discharges, Lavelle was transported by Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue to Froedtert South in Pleasant Prairie to be evaluated by medical personnel. Lavelle was later discharged and held on charges of Resisting Arrest, Causing Injury to an Officer, Obstructing and Making threats to Law Enforcement, and multiple outstanding traffic warrants.
One Pleasant Prairie Police Officer was injured during the suspect's combative struggle, sustaining leg and arm injuries. The officer was treated and released to restricted duties. In accordance with department policy, the use of force in this case is being reviewed. The routine review is ongoing and conducted with each use of force occurrence.
